Reviews of premieres at the Lichfield Festival

Posted on 12 January 2020

David has enjoyed a wonderful fortnight in his residency at Lichfield Festival. Amongst the varied offerings of the Festival, David had a total of ten pieces performed, two of which were world premieres.

A Vision of the Sea

Posted on 12 January 2020

Between 26 July and 13 August I was at my house in Deal, working on my orchestral piece for next year's BBC Proms, which is provisionally titled A Vision of the Sea. From before dawn until dusk I was surrounded by the constant calls of Herring Gulls, and they have got into the piece; in fact have been transformed into one of its main motivic ideas. At the same time, almost every day I made watercolour paintings of the sea and the sky, the majority in the early morning, which I felt helped me to compose. The weather during this time was a mixture of sunshine and cloud, and some of the skies were spectacular.

Reviews of recording of Symphony No.9

Posted on 23 February 2020

Robert Matthew-Walker for Classical Source describes the symphony as "A serious and compelling work of consistent musical art throughout… Here, in a number of ways, is a genuine symphony for our times." (Sep 2019).

Philip Scott for Limelight Magazine dubs Matthews "a genuine symphonist" whose Ninth "squeezes every drop of developmental interest out of his theme." (Aug 2019)...
